Stage 1: Pre-Renovation Treatment (Where Required)
Some lawns require preparatory work before physical renovation begins.
This advance visit is used to control persistent weeds or coarse, invasive grass types that would otherwise compete aggressively with new seed.
The treatment carefully suppresses unwanted species in advance of renovation. This ensures that when scarification and overseeding take place, the new grass has the best possible opportunity to establish evenly.
This stage is not always necessary. We assess and advise clearly when quoting.
Stage 2: Lawn Rescue Visit
Once the lawn is properly prepared, the main Lawn Rescue work is carried out, typically within a single carefully managed visit depending on lawn size and access.
Heavy Scarification – Removing the Obstruction Layer
We begin with multiple aggressive passes using professional scarifying machinery.
In severely affected lawns, this process can remove significant volumes of thatch and moss, often working back close to bare soil in the worst areas.
The lawn may appear dramatically thinned immediately afterwards. This is expected. Excess thatch acts as a barrier that restricts airflow, water movement and nutrient uptake. Removing it is essential for proper recovery.
Green waste is cleared from the lawn and placed in the agreed on-site location. Removal from site is not included as standard but can be arranged if required.
Aeration – Restoring Soil Structure
After scarification, we aerate the lawn to relieve compaction and improve subsurface conditions.
This stage:
• Opens the soil profile
• Improves airflow and drainage
• Encourages deeper root development
• Enhances seed-to-soil contact
Compacted soil is often a hidden cause of lawn decline. Correcting it after surface debris has been removed ensures that new seed establishes into a properly prepared root zone.
Direct-Drill Overseeding – Precision Establishment
We overseed using professional direct-drill machinery that places seed directly into the soil at the correct depth.
Where machinery access is limited, we use a professional broadcast spreader.
Direct drilling delivers:
• Superior seed-to-soil contact
• Higher germination rates
• Stronger root development
• More uniform recovery
We select high-quality seed blends suited to your lawn’s environment, whether full sun, partial shade or higher wear conditions. In some cases, we may introduce improved performing varieties to upgrade the overall lawn composition.
Organic-Based Seed Fertiliser
A carefully selected organic-based fertiliser is applied to support germination and establishment.
This feeds both the soil and the developing grass plant, encouraging balanced growth and supporting beneficial microbial activity within the root zone.
Lawn Hydration Treatment (Wetting Agent)
We apply a professional granular wetting agent to improve soil moisture distribution.
This helps:
• Reduce dry patch risk
• Improve rainfall penetration
• Support consistent seed germination
• Increase watering efficiency during aftercare
This stage is particularly important during the early establishment phase.
Organic Compost Top Dressing
A high-quality organic compost-based top dressing is applied across the lawn surface.
This enhances:
• Seed germination conditions
• Soil structure and organic content
• Microbial activity within the soil
• Overall lawn health during recovery
Top dressing plays a key role in rebuilding biological performance in lawns that have been in decline.
Green Waste Removal
Green waste removal from your property is not included within our service; however, we offer a range of simple and convenient options to help make disposal easy; see here. We will always discuss the most suitable solution with you in advance so that any waste generated can be managed smoothly and with minimal inconvenience.
What to Expect After Lawn Rescue
Immediately following Lawn Rescue, the dark black organic compost top dressing will cover the surface but it won't take too long before free green grass shoots appear.
As new seed germinates and establishes over the following weeks, grass density gradually increases and the lawn begins to thicken and even out over several months.
Recovery time depends on seasonal timing, soil temperature and correct aftercare. over several months. Please read the aftercare advice that you will need to do after the main renovation work is done.
Large Lawn Specialists
We specialise in medium and large lawn restoration projects across Surrey, Sussex and Kent.
Our commercial machinery allows us to deliver consistent, professional results across substantial areas, particularly where severe thatch accumulation, compaction or moss dominance has developed over time.
Domestic equipment rarely achieves this level of correction.
Lawn Rescue vs Lawn Renovation
Lawn Renovation is ideal for lawns that are tired but structurally sound.
Lawn Rescue is recommended where a lawn is unlikely to respond to the standard lawn renovation service, typically due to excessive thatch, moss, bare patches, soil dry patch issues and much more. We assess each lawn carefully and recommend the appropriate level of work based on condition and long-term outcome.
Ready to Restore Your Lawn?
If your lawn is severely thinned, moss-dominated or simply not responding to regular treatments, the first step is a professional assessment. We do this as a chargeable lawn survey or free as part of your first lawn treatment visit.
We will inspect the condition of the grass, thatch levels and soil structure before recommending either Lawn Renovation or Lawn Rescue. Our advice is based on what the lawn genuinely needs to recover properly and perform long term.
Following assessment, you will receive:
• A clear explanation of the lawn’s condition
• A structured recommendation
• Transparent pricing
• Guidance on timing and aftercare
Our Lawn Rescue service is available across Surrey, Sussex and areas of Kent and is particularly suited to medium and large lawns where professional machinery and expertise make a meaningful difference.
If you would like us to assess your lawn and advise on the most appropriate route to recovery, you can request a quotation online or contact our team directly.
